Microsoft Dives Head-First Into Mobile Hardware With Two 10.6-Inch Tablets

Microsoft Surface Pro Windows 8 Tablet

For those you still don’t know, Microsoft launched not one, but two new Windows 8 tablets last night.

Both tablets sport 10.6 inch screens. Microsoft’s Surface comes with an integrated Kickstand and 3mm thin, pressure sensitive cover that doubles as a fully functioning keyboard and trackpad. Called “Touch Cover”, it connects to the Microsoft Surface with a single magnetic click. Touch Cover will be available in 5 “vibrant” colors.

Both devices have 2 integrated cameras (one front one rear facing) but no specs on the cameras have been given yet.

The first device will be called The Surface for Windows RT device. This device is the thinner of the two tablets at 9.3mm. This is exactly 0.1mm thinner than Apple*s new iPad. Surface for Windows RT will weigh 676 grams. The device will ship with microSD, USB 2.0, and Micro HD Video ports. Storage can be configured to 32GB and 64GB.

Surface for Windows 8 Pro is the bigger and badder of the two new devices. The device will run an Intel Ivy Bridge processor, the tablet is thicker at 13.5mm, and heavier at 903 grams. But it also comes with a ClearType ※Full HD§ display capable of 1080p video playback. The device will ship with microSDXC, USB 3.0, and a Mini DisplayPort video connectors. Storage can be configured to 64GB and 128GB.

Microsoft Surface Pro Windows 8 TabletMicrosoft Surface Pro Windows 8 TabletMicrosoft Surface Pro Windows 8 Tablet

We have to now sit back, wait, and see who wins this round of tablet wars! From what Microsoft has announced, both devices promise to deliver a tight package. I like the Touch Cover idea, and as you will see from the video below, the magnetic “clip” makes sense. At 3 mm the Touch Cover is very thin and sure would be functional. Being able to hook this up to your workstation monitor at home or in the office via the DisplayPort connectors boost productivity. As for the hardware under the hood, we will have to see if Microsoft delivers.

“When will these devices start shipping?” you ask. “…and how much of my hard earned cash must I fork out for such a device?” I hear you asking next. Well, Microsoft isn’t saying how much either of these devices will cost. We know Surface for Windows RT will start shipping in the US when Windows 8 starts shipping in the third quater of the year. Surface for Windows 8 will start shipping 3 months after that. For now, check out the promo video below from Microsoft.

AllWinner Boxchip A13 Tablet Factory Tour

Check out this video of how these very young Chinese assembly line workers assemble the $55 (soon $49) AllWinner Boxchip A13 7″ Capacitive tablet. This Shenzhen factory assembly line cranks out about 4000 such tablets in a day’s work. As you can see from the video the work is very repetitive and the workers do not talk much. Compared to my office we look like a bunch of clowns. I also noticed the amount of women (or girls?) working in the factory.

Is Microsoft launching a Windows 8 tablet – live coverage from the press event later today

Microsoft Windows 8 tablet concept

There has been lots of talk in the past few days about a mystrious tablet being launched by Microsoft. The Redmond giant has arranged a mysterious press event later today at an unknown location. PC Advisor is promising live updates and coverage of the event so check out their page here.
